The Matera Difference

Matera Builders is a home remodeling and Andersen window and door installation company that has served the South Jersey shore since 1988. Rather than relying on subcontractors or patchwork crews, Matera Builders employs its own full-time carpenters, installers, and renovation specialists and runs its own fleet of trucks so one dedicated team handles every detail of your project from start to finish across Ocean City, Avalon, Stone Harbor, and Sea Isle City.
Every Matera Builders project is managed in-house, from a single custom window installation to a full-scale home renovation. Clients work directly with one dedicated team that coordinates each phase initial consultation, installation, and final walkthrough which means seamless communication, consistent quality, and a job done right the first time.
Matera Builders is an Andersen Elite Certified Contractor, Andersen's top installer tier, a designation held by fewer than 1% of Andersen contractors nationwide. Its crews train every year at Andersen's factory in Bayport, Minnesota, and hold advanced certification in Andersen Big Doors, completed alongside Andersen's engineering team in Arizona, as well as in the Weiland by Andersen moving glass wall system. Matera Builders is also a Therma-Tru Certified Installer.
Beyond its Andersen and Therma-Tru certifications, Matera Builders partners with Versatex to stay current on the latest exterior building practices, with product reps regularly visiting the company's warehouse for live demos and product updates.
The result is a team that is both highly skilled and continually trained, so Matera Builders delivers precise, lasting results on every window, door, and renovation project it takes on.

Frequently Asked Questions

Andersen windows, doors & coastal installation at the Jersey Shore

Andersen vs. Renewal by Andersen

No. Renewal by Andersen and Andersen windows are two different things sold by the same parent company. Renewal by Andersen is a separate franchise division that sells and installs one product: custom-sized insert replacement windows made from Fibrex, an Andersen-patented composite material. Andersen windows and doors are the core Andersen product catalog, sold and installed through independent certified contractors.

Matera Builders is an Andersen Elite Certified Contractor and installs the core Andersen catalog — full-frame, new construction windows and patio doors in standard sizes. We are not affiliated with Renewal by Andersen.

Andersen and Renewal by Andersen differ in four areas: product, purchasing, price, and warranty.

  • Product and materials. Andersen offers wood, aluminum-clad, vinyl-clad, and composite products across several series (100, 200, 400, A-Series, E-Series). Renewal by Andersen uses Fibrex composite exclusively and offers one custom-built replacement line.
  • Purchasing and installation. With Andersen, you choose your product and your contractor, which gives you control over both the product specification and the installation method. Renewal by Andersen is an all-in-one package — the same entity measures, manufactures, delivers, and installs.
  • Pricing and value. Andersen products have lower starting prices, and installation is quoted separately by your contractor. Renewal by Andersen is a premium-priced, full-service option that bundles product, labor, and warranty into a single number and typically costs more upfront.
  • Warranty. Andersen windows carry a 20-year limited warranty on glass and 10 years on non-glass components, with labor coverage provided by your installing contractor. Renewal by Andersen provides one warranty covering both product and installation, serviced by Renewal by Andersen.

For shore homes, the practical difference is installation method. Renewal by Andersen installs inserts into your existing window frames. Matera Builders installs full-frame, new construction units — which is what allows hidden water damage, flashing, and coastal design pressure requirements to be addressed properly.

No. Renewal by Andersen products are serviced only by the Renewal by Andersen retailer that originally installed them. You can find that retailer’s phone number on the product ID sticker located on the head jamb of the window or door, visible when the unit is in the open position.

Matera Builders does service Andersen windows and doors from the core Andersen catalog — parts, hardware, rollers, locks, and glass — for homeowners in Ocean City, Avalon, Stone Harbor, and Sea Isle City. Our carpenters are Andersen factory-trained and we stock common parts for fast turnaround.

Installation Method

The difference is what the new window is installed into.

An insert replacement window is installed inside your existing window frame. The old frame stays in the wall and becomes the rough opening for the new unit, which is fastened inside it with screws. The exterior is capped over with metal flashing, and the interior receives decorative mouldings to cover the original frame and any gaps.

A full-frame, new construction window removes the old window entirely, down to the structural rough opening framing in the wall — the same way a window is installed when a home is built. Matera Builders uses full-frame, new construction installation as our standard.

Insert replacement — pros:

  • Moderately lower installation cost per window.
  • Minimal disruption to interior trim and exterior siding during installation.
  • Ideal for original wood window frames in historic homes where architectural details need to be preserved.

Insert replacement — cons:

  • Decreased visible glass, because the new unit is smaller than the original opening.
  • Cannot be installed properly in an original frame that is out-of-square, wracked, or otherwise unable to meet the new window’s performance requirements.
  • Unforeseen leak issues inside the original frame are not addressed.
  • Flashing material to the home’s exterior wall is not replaced.
  • Design Pressure (DP) ratings are limited for coastal applications long-term.

Full-frame, new construction — pros:

  • Maximized visible glass for any given structural rough opening.
  • Unforeseen leak issues in existing homes are found and addressed.
  • New stud insulation for the rough framing and new flashing integrated into the drainage plane of the exterior wall.
  • Higher Design Pressure (DP) rating capability for a given window.
  • New interior and exterior trim installed and integrated into the home’s siding system.
  • Full warranty coverage for parts and installation.

Full-frame, new construction — cons:

  • Longer installation time.
  • Highest installation cost per window.

For coastal homes on the southern New Jersey shore, Matera Builders installs full-frame, new construction as our standard. Salt air, wind-driven rain, and hidden water damage in original frames are common on the barrier islands, and full-frame installation is the only method that addresses them.

Full-frame, new construction. Matera Builders removes the old window down to the structural rough opening, inspects and repairs the framing, installs new insulation and flashing integrated into the wall’s drainage plane, sets the new Andersen unit, and finishes with new interior and exterior trim tied into the siding system.

This is a more involved installation than an insert, and it costs more per window. On a shore home it is the method that lets us find rot before it spreads, achieve the Design Pressure rating the home actually needs, and warranty both the product and the installation. As an Andersen Elite Certified Contractor, our installation meets Andersen’s highest standard — which is what protects the product warranty over the long run.

Choosing Andersen Products

Matera Builders installs the full core Andersen catalog. Our standard series choices for shore homes are:

  • Windows — 400 Series: Tilt-Wash Double-Hung, Awning, Casement, and Gliding.
  • Patio Doors — A-Series: Gliding and Hinged.

Our standard product specifications include:

  • Low-E4 SmartSun dual-pane insulated glass with argon fill, which blocks 95% of UV rays to protect wood floors and furniture from sun damage.
  • Design Pressure (DP) upgrade frames for coastal performance on all patio doors.
  • High-Corrosion-Resistant (HCR) hinges and operators on all casement and awning windows.

We also install Andersen Big Doors — MultiGlide, Liftslide, Bifolding, and Pivot — and Therma-Tru entry doors as a Therma-Tru Certified Installer.

For windows, the right series usually depends on what is in the openings now, because Andersen standard sizes are designed to fit those rough openings best:

  • Original wood frame windows — 400 Series.
  • Wood frame windows with vinyl inserts — 400 Series.
  • Original vinyl, builder-grade windows — 200 Series Double-Hung, or 400 Series Casement and Awning.

For patio doors, the right series depends more on the look you want and the performance you need:

  • Best performance — A-Series Traditional or Contemporary.
  • Most traditional look — A-Series Traditional.
  • Most contemporary look — A-Series Contemporary.
  • Most visible glass — 200 Series Perma-Shield or Narroline.
  • Most cost-effective — 200 Series Perma-Shield.

This is a starting point, not a final answer. The right specification depends on your home’s exposure, elevation, existing framing, and design. Matera Builders walks the home and specifies each opening during a free consultation.

Both are solid wood frame windows. The difference is the exterior cladding.

  • The 400 Series has a vinyl-clad Perma-Shield exterior for low maintenance. It is our most popular, time-tested option and offers strong value.
  • The A-Series has an extruded fiberglass composite exterior for maximum coastal performance and a wider range of color options.

On the southern New Jersey shore, Matera Builders specifies the 400 Series for most window replacements and the A-Series for patio doors, where coastal exposure and Design Pressure requirements are highest.

For homes near the ocean, the best Andersen windows have durable composite or vinyl-clad exteriors that resist salt corrosion, plus structural reinforcement to handle coastal wind loads. Matera Builders’ standard coastal specification is:

  • Windows — 400 Series.
  • Patio Doors — A-Series.
  • Glass — Low-E4 SmartSun dual-pane insulated glass with argon fill.
  • Frames — Design Pressure (DP) upgrade frames on all patio doors.
  • Hardware — High-Corrosion-Resistant (HCR) hinges and operators on all casement and awning windows.

Product selection is only half of it. On a barrier island, installation method determines whether the product performs. Matera Builders installs full-frame, new construction units so flashing is integrated into the wall’s drainage plane and the opening achieves the Design Pressure rating the home requires. We have been specifying and installing Andersen products for shore homes in Ocean City, Avalon, Stone Harbor, and Sea Isle City since 1988.

You are not required to use one, but Andersen’s warranty coverage depends on the product being installed according to Andersen’s standards — so who installs the window directly affects whether the warranty holds. A high-end Andersen unit that is not leveled, shimmed, flashed, and sealed correctly will still fail.

Matera Builders is an Andersen Elite Certified Contractor, a designation earned by the top 1% of Andersen contractors nationwide. Our installers are Andersen factory-trained, we travel to the Andersen factory in Bayport, Minnesota for updated instruction on installation techniques, and we have direct access to Andersen products and support. We use full-time carpenters on staff — not subcontractors or general installers.

Cost and Value

Andersen windows cost more than builder-grade options for five reasons: materials, glass engineering, customization, warranty, and installation complexity.

  • Premium materials. Unlike budget vinyl windows, the Andersen 400 Series pairs a natural wood interior that can be stained or painted with a heavy-duty, weather-resistant vinyl exterior cladding. You get real wood inside and protection from the elements outside.
  • Superior energy efficiency. Andersen puts significant engineering into its glass packages. The 400 Series lets you specify glass — Low-E4, SmartSun, HeatLock — to suit your climate, blocking UV rays, lowering cooling costs, and reducing interior condensation.
  • Extensive customization. The 400 Series offers a wide array of sizes, grille patterns, hardware finishes, and colors. That flexibility carries a manufacturing and design premium.
  • Brand reputation and warranty. Andersen is one of the most recognized window brands in North America, backed by a limited warranty of 20 years on glass and 10 years on non-glass parts.
  • Installation complexity. Wood-clad Andersen windows are heavy and highly customizable, and they require experienced carpenters to install correctly, which adds to total project cost.

Andersen windows are worth it if you prioritize premium materials, energy efficiency, and long-term durability, and you plan to stay in the home. They command a higher price than builder-grade vinyl, but they typically last 30 to 50 years depending on the series and add meaningful curb appeal.

On the southern New Jersey shore the calculation is different than it is inland. Salt air, humidity, and wind-driven rain destroy lower-grade products quickly, so the replacement cycle on a cheap window is much shorter here than the sticker price suggests. Matera Builders will give you an honest recommendation during a free consultation, including whether the premium makes sense for your home.

Yes. Black windows generally cost 10% to 30% more than standard white windows, and the premium can run higher depending on the product line and the finish you choose.

The price difference comes from three things:

  • Specialized materials. Black frames absorb more heat and UV, which requires advanced materials, thermal breaks, and heat-reflective coatings to prevent warping or fading.
  • Manufacturing complexity. Applying specialized dark finishes or co-extruding black material adds production steps and labor.
  • Interior and exterior. Choosing black on both the interior and exterior typically costs more than an exterior-only black frame.

The premium varies by Andersen series. The A-Series offers a broad standard color range, including dark finishes, in an extruded fiberglass composite exterior that handles heat well — which is often the more sensible route on a shore home than adding a painted finish to a lighter-duty line. Matera Builders can price the color options against each other during your consultation.

Yes, but rarely dollar-for-dollar. Andersen windows increase home value by improving curb appeal and energy efficiency and by carrying a strong, transferable brand name and warranty. Nationally, high-quality replacement windows typically recoup roughly 65% to 75% of their cost at resale.

Why Andersen adds value:

  • Curb appeal. Replacing outdated, warped, or drafty windows immediately modernizes a home’s exterior.
  • Energy efficiency. High-performance glass reduces heating and cooling costs, which is a real selling point for buyers.
  • Durability. Premium wood and composite materials will not rot, peel, or warp the way cheaper materials do.
  • Buyer recognition. Appraisers and agents note that Andersen’s brand name helps justify a higher asking price, even if a blanket percentage increase is an exaggeration.

Things to keep in mind:

  • High upfront cost. Andersen products and professional installation are a major investment.
  • Local market. In a neighborhood where most homes have basic vinyl windows, premium products can mean over-improving. On the Ocean City, Avalon, Stone Harbor, and Sea Isle City market, that is rarely the constraint — buyers here expect coastal-grade products and read them as a sign the home has been maintained.

Replacing all your windows at once is generally more cost-effective per window and guarantees a uniform look. Replacing in phases is a practical strategy if the upfront cost is too high. The right answer depends on your budget, the condition of your current windows, and how long you plan to stay.

The case for replacing all at once:

  • Lower per-window cost. Bulk ordering and a single mobilization mean better pricing and lower labor cost per opening.
  • Cohesive appearance. Colors, styles, and hardware match. Phasing risks a series or finish being discontinued before you finish the house.
  • Maximum efficiency gain. Replacing every drafty opening at once produces an immediate, noticeable improvement in comfort and HVAC performance.
  • One-time disruption. You go through the installation process once.

The case for phased replacement:

  • Budget flexibility. You can spread the cost over months or years instead of financing a whole-home project at once.
  • Prioritize problem areas. Tackle the most damaged, drafty, or sun-facing openings first for the highest return on comfort.

For seasonal and rental shore homes, phasing can also be scheduled around rental turnovers. Matera Builders coordinates access and keeps owners updated remotely through a Buildertrend project dashboard with photos and updates.

If you are weighing the two, tell us how many windows your home has, why you are considering replacement (drafts, damage, or style), and your rough budget, and we will price both approaches.

Lifespan, Warranty, and Service

Andersen windows typically last 30 to 50 years, depending on the product line, the quality of the installation, how well they are maintained, and the climate. Lifespan varies by series:

  • Vinyl-clad (200 and 400 Series): 30 to 40 years. These perform well, though vinyl expands and contracts with temperature shifts over time.
  • Fiberglass composite and aluminum-clad (A-Series and E-Series): 40 to 50 years. Wood frames do not move the way vinyl does, but exposed wood requires repainting and resealing every 7 to 10 years to prevent rot.

What determines whether you get the full lifespan:

  • Installation. This is the single biggest factor. Use an Andersen certified contractor — Matera Builders is an Andersen Elite Certified Contractor, the top 1% nationwide.
  • Maintenance. Clear dirt from tracks, inspect weatherstripping for drafts, and re-caulk the exterior when necessary.
  • Climate. Harsh coastal weather and extreme temperature swings shorten the life of seals and hardware. On the shore, we specify High-Corrosion-Resistant hardware and Design Pressure upgrade frames for exactly this reason.

Andersen offers a limited warranty of 20 years on standard glass and 10 years on non-glass components such as hardware and frames. Labor coverage is separate and comes from your installing contractor.

That distinction matters. Andersen’s warranty generally depends on the product having been installed according to Andersen’s standards, so a failure traced to a bad installation may not be covered. When Matera Builders installs a full-frame, new construction Andersen unit, you get full warranty coverage on both the parts and the installation.

If you are dealing with fogged glass, drafts, or failed hardware on an existing Andersen product, parts can often be repaired or ordered directly rather than replacing the whole unit. Matera Builders stocks common Andersen parts and our carpenters are Andersen factory-trained. Call 609-391-0429 or email info@materabuilders.com.
